In England an excise licence is required to manufacture spirits by any means.
The penalty for “moonshine” (=illegal manufactured spirits) is a fine of up to £1,000 and confiscation of the spirit-making equipment.
Where is moonshine illegal?
Moonshine is any illegally made distilled alcohol. Classically it is corn liquor distilled from fermented corn and / or sugar. Distilling alcohol without state and federal permits is illegal in every single state in the US. Making moonshine is illegal because the government wishes to collect tax revenue.
Can you buy moonshine?
Moonshine is essentially any hard liquor that is made without a license. In the U.S., you must have a permit license to distill liquor for consumption. Most moonshine is around 150 proof. Most spirits sold in liquor stores are around 80 proof or less; that means the liquid is 40% alcohol.
How much moonshine can you make legally?
While most states prohibit home moonshining, state laws sometimes conflict with federal law. In Missouri, for example, a person 21 or over may produce up to 100 gallons of spirits per year for personal consumption without a permit.
