How strong is moonshine?
There isn’t anything inherently dangerous about moonshine — at least no more dangerous than any other alcoholic drink. When made properly, it is simply very strong alcohol with a very hard taste, or “kick,” because it hasn’t been aged. It is usually very potent, as high as 150 proof, which is about 75 percent alcohol.
Can you make moonshine without a still?
According to the feds, it is legal to have a still for decoration, distilling water, distilling essential oils, etc. However, be advised it is illegal to distill alcohol without having either a “distilled spirits permit” or a “federal fuel alcohol permit.”
Can you drink moonshine straight?
While most people drink it straight from the jar (more on that in a minute), moonshine makes an exceptionally good spirit for cocktails. Think about it, it’s basically whiskey. Keep the vodka and gin on the shelf and mix in White Lightning in their place. You’ll be amazed by the result.
What does moonshine taste like?
Vodka has a milder taste. I think moonshine smells closer to turpentine than it does to vodka. But both have mostly the flavor of the alcohol dominating the taste. Bourbon is a whiskey made with at lease 51% corn, but it has been aged in oak which imparts a lot of the bourbon flavor.
